Treatment by the Hygienist

Tooth decay and gum disease [when dentists talk about “gums” they usually include the bone which supports the teeth], are the most common diseases in the world. At Avenue Dental, your oral health will be approached on the Maxim; ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure’. Our team is fortunate to have four dental hygienists committed to helping you attain and then to maintain a healthy dentition.

What is a Hygienist?
A hygienist is a University trained professional who works with your dentist to help treat and prevent periodontal [gum] disease, and prevent caries [tooth decay].

What does a Hygienist do?

They look after the supporting structures of your teeth with regular removal of the hard deposit, [calculus], which accumulates around the necks of your teeth. They will also monitor and advise you on the best ways to care for your teeth at home. Principally this involves how to effectively remove plaque, [ a soft mix of decomposing food and bacteria], which collects on any surface which is not self cleansing, producing acid, toxins, and odour.
