Teens
Teenagers present a differing challenge from their younger siblings. With some variations, age thirteen presents us without any deciduous (baby) teeth, and all of the adult teeth in position. It is at this time in life that our children are often faced with orthodontics (braces). When it comes to braces, we often think about the perfect smile. This is important when it comes to the social and personal impact that our children face when they move into adulthood. Of equal importance, however, is to ensure that all of our children’s teeth bite correctly. A poor bite can eventuate with headaches, migraines, food packing, along with severe wear, decay and gum disease.

Adult teeth are a little less susceptible to decay, however, as dentists, we frequently see young adults progress into their life away from home, requiring a number of minor restorations, or worse, some major intervention. This comes at a time when their income is barely adequate for the bare necessities. Additionally, planning for their forties and beyond (old and decrepit we’re told), hasn’t even occurred to them. Accordingly, decayed teeth are often ignored until it is too late, resulting in tooth loss and further long-term problems.

A small filling will often last indefinitely, however a large filling (except Cerec) will often need replacing every five to ten years. Large fillings also fracture, resulting in crowns, endodontics (root canals), or worse, extraction.

For this reason, we strongly encourage that teenagers come regularly to see the dentist (especially teenagers with braces). With regular visits, decay is prevented, or, is usually discovered when it is small. By being small, if restored, it will often last indefinitely.

At Avenue Dental, our teenagers are usually seen by our dental therapists, Natasha Ferrington and Deborah Kerridge.  Natasha and Deb are specially trained in treating teenagers teeth. Additionally, Natasha and Deb are fully trained dental hygienists. During their visit, they will spend time discussing the long-term maintenance of their teeth and gums. This, along with regular examinations, should ensure their dental health continues into their twenties and beyond.

As always, regular brushing, flossing and a balanced diet at home is essential in having happy, healthy teeth. Let us advise you in the best methods and materials to obtain this.
