Dental veneers are finely sculptured shells, which bond to the front of your teeth to change their colour or shape, make them look straighter, close gaps, treat chipped or broken teeth or lengthen teeth.

Dental veneers are white coverings over the front of the teeth to change the shape, position and colour of the teeth.

Designing Your Smile – and Trialling It!

One of the great things about dental veneers is that you and your dentist can design your preferred smile by altering these attributes in any way you chose.

Some people like square teeth, others like a more rounded shape to their teeth. The same goes for colour; some people want a bright white colour to their teeth while others like a more natural shade.  Some people like a broad wide smile; others prefer a more understated smile. You can determine all these characteristics with your dentist through a process we call a ‘smile design’. This ‘smile design’ process leads to a customised result just for you, based on the characteristics you prefer.

Once a ‘smile design’ is completed, your dentist can then actually trial your smile before any treatment is commenced. This ‘smile trial’ allows both you and your dentist to see an approximation of your new smile in your mouth. Just like you never know what someone else’s haircut will look like on you until you actually have it, the ‘smile trial’ lets you trial your new look and make alterations on it before you commit to your preferred smile.

Once you are happy with your smile, then it comes to more technical decisions. Where veneers are concerned, the choice is in the materials. There are two main materials that can be used effectively for dental veneers.

Can Everyone get Veneers?

When the underlying tooth is strong, veneers can be an alternative to crowns which can be quite intrusive to the teeth. Usually made of porcelain, (they can also be made with resin) veneers are ideal for treating chipped, discoloured or misaligned teeth. They may also be suitable for repairing and closing gaps between your teeth.

Resin veneers are made of a white resin or “plastic” material and are directly bonded onto the tooth. Resin veneers can look great, especially directly after completion, and they are less expensive. They are roughly 2.5 times weaker than enamel and are somewhat porous so they have a tendency to darken, stain and break over longer periods.

Porcelain Veneers are another cosmetic dentistry option available on the Sunshine Coast and North Brisbane to create beautiful smiles.

Porcelain veneers are made from dental porcelain and give the best appearance of any material. They are very life-like as well as being up to 20 percent stronger than enamel. They are made in a dental laboratory but not directly bonded to the tooth. They are very stable and do not have the same tendency to darken, stain and break over the longer term.
