At Avenue Dental, dental restorations are used to repair worn, damaged and decayed teeth to help the tooth last longer for your child. Both baby teeth and adult teeth can be repaired by restorations.

Baby teeth are important for eating, speaking, looking good and holding space for the adult tooth to replace. Some baby teeth, on average, remain in your child’s mouth up until 13 years of age.

Restorations are commonly used to fix teeth that have developed tooth cavities. There is a range of restoration materials, also known as filling materials, available, with the most appropriate material depending on the situation it is to be used in. The restoration materials commonly used in children are:

Resin composite, a white plastic like material.
Glass ionomer cement, a white filling material that also releases fluoride.
A mixture of resin composite and glass ionomer cement.
Pre-formed stainless steel (silver) crowns.
Pre- formed zirconia (tooth coloured) crowns.

For children, the back teeth are commonly restored with resin composite or with pre-formed stainless steel crowns. Pre-formed stainless steel crowns are the most successful and longest lasting technique for restoring primary, or baby, molars. If a cavity is small, our highly skilled dentists and oral health therapists may consider recommending a white filling material. They will discuss with you what material they believe is the most appropriate for your child’s individual teeth, in order to achieve the best possible outcome.
