Orthodontic treatment is most commonly used for children when all the baby teeth have fallen out and the adult teeth replace them, generally about the age of puberty.
For some young adults, especially girls, this may be as early as 10 years old.
Orthodontic treatment is most effective during this time because the jaw bones are still developing, and this can be a huge advantage when treating many orthodontic conditions.
For example, overbites are often caused by an under developed lower jaw. During puberty, the lower jaw wants to grow rapidly. Hence, by unlocking the overbite with braces or clear aligners before this growth spurt begins, the under developed lower jaw can grow to its full potential and results in a healthier bite, generally improving facial aesthetics.
In the past only fixed braces were an option for teenagers. Now with advances in clear aligner technology and manufacturing, more and more teenage cases can be treated with clear aligners (first pioneered by Invisalign).
However, fixed braces generally have the most predictable results for teenagers as they are bonded onto the teeth to move them constantly and consistently. Clear aligners must also be worn 24/7 which can be difficult for some teenagers. Aligners can be lost or damaged easily.
Orthodontic treatment during teenage years ensures the teeth are positioned optimally to reduce excess wear and are easier to clean for the adult years to come.
Dental conditions commonly treated with the aid of orthodontics include:
- Crowding (crooked teeth)
- Overbite, underbite, crossbite
- Gummy smile
- Narrow smile
- Thin lips
- Periodontal disease (gum disease such as chronic gingivitis and periodontitis)
- Temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and pain
- Bruxism (tooth grinding and clenching)
- Worn teeth
- Sleep apnoea
In certain cases, both fixed braces and clear aligners can be used in the same orthodontic plan to reduce the time needed for braces.
