At Avenue Dental we specifically set aside dental emergency appointments daily with our dentists at each of our Sunshine Coast and Brisbane dental practices. If the trauma is after hours you can still contact a dentist by phoning one of our practices where there is a dentist on emergency standby.   Whether you are an existing patient or have never seen us before, we will do all we can to prioritise your child’s treatment.  We know it is a scary time; but try to remain calm and encourage your child to remain calm.  We are here to help you.

Dental trauma is sadly one of the most common accidents that can occur with children at all age levels.  It affects 1 in 3 children under 6, and 1 in 4 school aged children.  Urgent and proper management is particularly important in ensuring your child can get the best possible outcome.

In adult teeth, a dental trauma can have a life-long consequence of the tooth, particularly if not managed quickly and well.   This is why our dentists and oral health therapists will ensure that your child is seen as quickly as possible after a dental accident.

Soft Tissue Trauma and Bleeding

If there is bleeding and trauma to the mouth-

  • Remain calm, apply firm pressure with a clean cloth to the bleeding mouth. Maintain this pressure for at least 10 minutes with head elevated.
  • If available, apply a cold compress.
  • If bleeding cannot be controlled, seek immediate dental care with our dentists and oral health therapists.
  • If bleeding can be controlled, please arrange a review of the area with us.
  • For healing and cleansing of traumatized area, warm saltwater mouth rinse can reduce infection risks.

Knocked Tooth Out / Loose / Displaced

If a baby tooth is knocked out (avulsed) they are not to be re-implanted.

If an adult tooth is knocked out immediate important action is recommended to increase the chance of re-implanting it:

  • Remain calm, apply firm pressure with a clean cloth to the bleeding mouth (socket), and find the knocked out tooth.
  • Handle the crown of the tooth only and avoid touching the root.
  • Do not touch, rub or scrape any tissue fragments on the root of the tooth.
  • Clean the tooth. If it is dirty rinse it in milk or briefly in water. The owner of the tooth can also gently hold the tooth in their mouth and clean it with their own saliva, but this is not recommended if the patient is too distressed or in shock, and not recommended in children.
  • Once the root of tooth is clean, orientate the tooth into the right position, and immediately re-implant it into the socket where the tooth came out and hold in place with finger.
  • If unable to re-implant it, store the tooth in milk, the owners mouth next to their cheek or seal it in plastic with saliva. Do not store the tooth in water.  Avoid drying out the tooth roots.
  • Seek immediate dental care with one of our highly skilled dentists.

If the tooth is displaced or loose but not fully avulsed, do not pull the tooth out unless there is a high risk of inhaling the tooth.  Seek immediate care with one of our highly skilled dentists at one of our Avenue Dental practices on the Sunshine Coast and North lakes.

Chips, Cracks and Fractures

If a tooth is only minimally chipped with no symptoms  and there is no movement of the tooth or trauma to the soft tissue, contact one of our dental practices here on the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, we will be able to offer advice and arrange a review appointment with one of our dentists or oral health therapists within 24 hours.

If a tooth is largely chipped, there has been movement of the tooth, trauma to the soft tissue and/or has other symptoms, seek immediate professional dental care.  There can be damage to the nerve of the tooth and delaying treatment may delay saving the tooth.

Trauma and dental emergencies are stressful for people and families.
