When people talk about health insurance for dentistry, they are meaning they have “extras” cover as part of their private health insurance and dentistry is one of the services covered in “extras” along with other health services such as physiotherapy, optometrists, massage, dietetics, Chiropractics, podiatry, psychology, and speech therapy to name a few.
With most health funds dentistry is broken up into two categories, “General” and “Major”. General dentistry usually covers such dental services such as exams, scale and cleans, fillings, mouthguards, simple extractions, some dentures, and other such services. Major dental usually includes dental services such as crowns, bridges, dental implants, veneers, root canal treatment, and surgical extractions. Orthodontic treatment is sometimes combined in as part of major dental and sometimes a stand along category of treatment. There are often waiting periods when you join a health fund with longer waiting periods for major dental over general dental being the norm.
When you attend a dental visit and you have private health insurance with “extras” cover that includes dentistry, your private health insurance will contribute some amount to your appointment depending on your level of cover, what services were performed, the item codes used for these services and your annual limits with you private health fund. This can often make it confusing how much you will be able to claim back from your health fund as each health fund and level of cover has different rebates.
That is why at Avenue Dental we try to utilize the quoting function on our HICAPS terminals so that we can tell you how much you will receive back from your health fund before your appointment. Make sure you bring your private health insurance card with you to your appointment and our friendly staff will be happy to inform you of the rebate your private health insurance fund will provide for your appointment.
If you are interested to find out how much you would receive back from your health fund for certain treatments, please see Avenue Dental at one of our Sunshine Coast or North Lakes dental practices in Caloundra, Kawana, Maroochydore, Bli Bli, North Lakes, Baringa, Sippy Downs, Baringa, Murrumba Downs, Tewantin, Beerwah and Woolloongabba.
