Health funds can be broken up into for profit or not for profit health funds. For profit health funds make profits that exist to benefit shareholders while not for profit health funds exist purely to benefit members.

Below is a table that lists all private health insurers available in Australia. Some private health funds are restricted to certain members while others are open for anyone to join. This table includes a brief description of each health fund as well as whether they operate on a for profit or not for profit basis. For profit health funds generally means that profits go to benefit shareholders, not just members. Not for profit health funds generally exist purely to benefit members and don’t make profits to benefit shareholders. 27 of the not for profit health funds have banded together under the banner of “Members Own Health Funds” to highlight the difference between for profit and not for profit private health insurance.
