Snoring Devices

At Avenue Dental, we work in conjunction with an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon when constructing a snoring appliance. We find this gives you the best opportunity for your snoring appliance having a successful outcome.

Snoring appliances are used to reduce snoring and may be used for treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Snoring appliances (also called Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS)) work by holding your lower jaw and tongue forward when sleeping, opening up your airway.

Diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
A significant proportion of chronic snorers have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Since OSA is a medical disorder with serious health implications it is important that you are under the care of an ENT or sleep physician. They may require you to undergo a diagnostic sleep study before and/or after MAS use.

Treatment

Oral appliance therapy has been scientifically proven to be effective in treating snoring and mild to moderate OSA. For people with severe OSA, a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine is recommended as the main treatment; however oral appliance therapy can often be used effectively in conjunction with CPAP machines so are still useful.

While documented evidence validates oral appliances have substantially reduce snoring and sleep apnoea in many cases, there is no guarantee that this therapy will be successful for every person. Several factors contribute to having snoring/sleep apnoea including nasal obstruction, narrow airway space in the throat, and excess weight constricting the airway. Since each person has their own unique set of factors, an oral appliance does not reduce snoring in everyone. While the contributing factors will be assessed before treatment, the combined effect can be complex.

The majority of people find dental sleep appliances comfortable; however, some people with a high level of sensitivity may not be able to tolerate the appliance in their mouth.

Snoring Appliances

Snoring Appliances may cause temporary side effects such as excessive salivation, dry mouth, sore jaw joints or muscles, or discomfort to teeth and gums. In some cases, sore jaw joints will cause you to stop using the appliance. In rare cases the joint may continue to be sore after cessation of the appliance use and this may require further treatment with a physiotherapist.

As will be discussed during your clinical visit, temporary or in some cases permanent bite changes may occur.  Adolescents and young adults are most at risk. For some people, this change is not noticeable and does not require any intervention. For others, their bite change may require subsequent orthodontic treatment with a high financial cost. Each patient must weigh the potential benefits and risks of bite changes to make their own snoring appliance decision.

It is extremely rare for an oral appliance to have an impact on well fitted and designed crowns, bridges or implants. Crowns, bridges and implants that have not been adequately designed or cemented may be loosened by an oral appliance.

Regular Reviews

You will be reviewed within 6 weeks of receiving your appliance. It is important that you bring your appliance to your 6 monthly hygiene visits to ensure treatment remains successful and to evaluate the response of the teeth and jaw joint. The appliance will also be checked for any excessive wear or damage. If any symptoms occur it is recommended that the appliance not be worn until a further clinical evaluation is arranged.

Follow up with your ENT or sleep physician is also essential.
