Dr Gladys Tejada and Dentistry
Born and raised in the Philippines, Gladys moved to Australia at the age of 16 to a rural Queensland town where she finished high school. Her knowledge about dentists at the time was that dentists pull teeth out. After finishing year 12, she was offered a job as a dental assistant at a local dentist. It was during this period when she was fortunate enough to be assisting extremely passionate dentists, she began to see just how important oral health was, and how it not only effects the mouth, but a person’s overall health. What struck her more was seeing what seems to be the stigma built around dentistry and dentists being a ‘hated’, or an ‘uncomfortable’ place to be.
The itch to study dentistry and changing this stigma grew stronger that she made the move to Gold Coast, where she first studied 2 years of Dental Technology, and then 5 years of Dental Health Science. During her studies, she was awarded the Preclinical Fixed Prosthodontic award and graduated with Academic Excellence in Bachelor of Dental Health Science and Master of Dentistry from Griffith University.
It was during the third year of her degree when she learnt about Avenue Dental on the Sunshine Coast, and strongly resonated with the purpose of positively transforming dentistry. She just knew that Avenue Dental was the team she wanted to work. Together with her partner, she relocated to the Sunshine Coast and is now over the moon to be part of the Avenue Dental team in Caloundra. She can proudly say she loves coming to work each day working with such an amazing team, in a practice that strongly focuses only giving the very best dental care for every patient.
Gladys has a deep passion for all aspects of dentistry as well as educating her patients on the cause of the problem opposed to just fixing the issue. She focuses not only prevention but always encourages the importance of a long-term solution preventing bigger problems arising in the future. Gladys loves interacting with people of all ages and has a way of making her patients feel comfortable in what some people consider an uncomfortable environment. She believes that being able to help patients and getting them to feel comfortable in the dental setting is rewarding and gives a greater meaning and fulfillment in her career.
In Gladys’ free time, she likes to keep fit by going to gym most mornings before work, exploring different places around the Sunshine Coast, or simply sitting on the balcony reading a book. She loves spending time with her friends and family, and quite often enjoys a sunrise walk along the beach listening to the waves crashing and the birds chirping. If you ever see Gladys on one of these walks, make sure you say hi because she is always up for a chat!
