While a gummy smile is completely natural and nothing to be concerned about, some people dislike the amount of gum they show when smiling. This may cause a loss of self confidence in their full smile and can even cause them to fake their smile or to stop smiling.
In the past the treatments for gummy smile were extreme and involved invasive surgery to remove gum tissue and cut the muscles in the top lip so they could not lift as high.
Thankfully a gummy smile can now be treated simply and effectively using muscle relaxant treatment. Muscle relaxants work by reducing muscular activity in the upper lip, allowing for a softer smile where less gum tissue is shown. The relaxants weaken after a few months.
What does the Treatment Involve?
It’s really simple. The procedure only takes around 10 minutes with only 1-2 small injections each side of the nose. You will be able to return to work or your normal day following the procedure, the same as any other anti-wrinkle appointment.
How soon will I see results?
You will see results as soon as 48 hours after treatment. However, the full result occurs after 14 days when the muscle relaxants are at their maximum effect. The muscle relaxing product takes some time to integrate into the muscles.
How Long does it last?
Lasting times are different for everybody, typically from 3 to 6 months. You will need to have a top up treatment completed then, otherwise the effect will wear off and the gummy smile return. Because this treatment isn’t permanent if you find you do miss your gummy smile, it will wear off in time and return to its pre-treatment lift.
