Dental veneers are finely sculptured shells, which bond to the front of your teeth to change their colour or shape, make them look straighter, close gaps, treat chipped or broken teeth or lengthen teeth. Cosmetic dentistry veneers can help create beautiful, flawless smiles right here on the Sunshine Coast.

Changing someone’s smile can be one of the most rewarding experiences for both dentists and patients alike. One of the most common ways dentists improve a smile is through placing dental veneers. Dental veneers are white coverings over the front of the teeth to change the shape, position and color of the teeth. One of the great things about dental veneers is that you and your dentist can design your preferred smile by altering these attributes in any way you chose.

Some people like square teeth, others like more rounded shape to their teeth. The same goes for colour; some people want a bright white color to their teeth whilst others like a more natural shade.  Some people like a really broad wide smile; others prefer a more understated smile. You can determine all of these characteristics with your dentist through a process we call a ‘smile design’. This smile design is customized based on the characteristics you prefer.

Once a smile design is completed, your dentist can then actually trial your smile before any treatment is commenced. This “smile trial” lets both you and your dentist see an approximation of your new smile in your mouth. Just like the fact that you never know what someone else’s haircut will look like on you until you actually get it, the smile trial lets you try before you commit to the smile you and your dentist have created and make any alterations.

Once you are happy with your smile, then it comes to the more technical decisions. Where veneers are concerned, the choice is in the materials. There are two main materials that can be used effectively for dental veneers.

When to get Veneers?

Underlying tooth is strong, veneers can be an alternative to crowns which can be quite intrusive to the teeth. Usually made of porcelain, (they can also be made with resin) veneers are ideal for treating chipped, discoloured or misaligned teeth. They may also be suitable for repairing and closing gaps between your teeth.

Resin Veneers

Resin veneers are made of a white resin or “plastic” material that is directly bonded onto the tooth. The resin can be bonded directly onto the teeth and can be made in very thin sections. Resin veneers can look great, especially directly after they have been completed, and they are generally less expensive. They are roughly 2.5 times weaker than enamel and the material is quite porous so it does have the tendency to darken, stain and break over longer periods.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers are a cosmetic dentistry option available on the Sunshine Coast to create beautiful smiles.

Porcelain veneers are made from dental porcelain and give the best appearance of any material available. This material is very life like as well as being up to 20% stronger than enamel. They are not directly bonded to the tooth and are made in a dental laboratory. They are very stable over time and do not have the same tendency to darken, stain and break over the longer term.

There are no right or wrong decisions regarding the types of veneers you choose, only advantages and disadvantages. These advantages and disadvantages will vary depending on each individual case such as how much material is required, do you grind at night, even what type of foods and drinks you prefer as well as the health of your other teeth.
