What to do if you’ve knocked out an adult tooth
If you can find the tooth handle it by the shiny white crown and avoid touching the root. If it’s dirty, wash it under water for less than 10 seconds and if feasible, gently press the tooth back into its original place in the mouth. You can then very gently bite on a towel to hold it in place until you can see a dentist. If you can’t replace the tooth there and then, store the tooth in milk (not water) and immediately get to a dentist. If you don’t have any milk you can suck the tooth inside your mouth between the back teeth and cheek (don’t swallow it!) or keep it in a zip-lock plastic bag. Don’t let the tooth dry out. Time is critical.

What to do if your child has knocked out a baby tooth
Comfort the child. Find the tooth if you can. Do not try replace a baby tooth in its place in the mouth. Trying to re-implant a baby tooth into the socket could cause permanent damage to the developing adult tooth. Go to a dentist so that they can see whether there’s any other damage to lips, gums or the permanent teeth. The dentist will not re-implant the baby tooth.
