Early Release of Superannuation for Dental Treatment

For many Australians, the cost of dental treatment can be a barrier to care. If you’re experiencing ongoing pain or require essential treatment but are unable to cover the cost upfront, you may be eligible to apply for early release of your superannuation on compassionate grounds through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

This process is managed entirely by the ATO and may allow you to access a portion of your super to help pay for dental treatment.

What is Compassionate Release of Super?

The ATO may approve the early release of superannuation in very specific circumstances, called compassionate grounds. These include situations where funds are required to pay for:

  • Medical treatment or transport for you or a dependant
  • Preventing foreclosure on a mortgage
  • Modifying a home or vehicle for a severe disability
  • Palliative care
  • Funeral or burial expenses for a dependant

For dental treatment, applications fall under the category of medical treatment.

Eligibility for Dental Treatment

To apply for early release of super for dental reasons, you’ll need to meet all of the following conditions set by the ATO:

Medical Grounds

You or your dependant require treatment to:

  • Treat a life-threatening condition
  • Alleviate acute or chronic pain
  • Address acute or chronic mental illness
  • The treatment is not readily available through the public health system.

Supporting Evidence

Applications must include:

  • An itemised treatment plan or unpaid invoice

  • Two medical reports — one from a medical or dental specialist, and one from a dentist or GP. These must be dated within six months of your application.

Unpaid Expenses

The ATO can only approve access for unpaid expenses. If you have already paid using a loan, credit card, or savings, you are not eligible.

Financial Hardship

You must be unable to meet the cost of treatment without using superannuation (e.g. you cannot cover the expense through savings, loans, or selling assets).

Residency

You are, or have been, an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

How the process works

  • Treatment Plan
Your dentist will provide a detailed plan and itemised quote.

  • Medical Reports
You will need written reports supporting the necessity of treatment.

  • Application
Submit your application to the ATO online, along with your supporting documents.

  • ATO Decision
The ATO reviews and determines eligibility. If approved, funds are released directly from your superannuation fund.

Important Considerations

  • Avenue Dental cannot provide financial advice. We can assist by supplying treatment plans and quotes, but eligibility and approval are determined solely by the ATO.

  • Super withdrawn on compassionate grounds is treated as a normal super lump sum and may have tax implications.

  • Significant penalties can apply for providing misleading information or accessing super illegally.
