Invisalign vs Braces – Which Clear Aligner or Braces Option Is Right for You?
Thinking About Straightening Your Teeth? Here’s What to Consider First
Orthodontic treatment has come a long way. Where metal braces were once the only option for straightening teeth, clear aligner systems like Invisalign have given patients a different path – one that suits some situations well, but not every situation.
If you’re weighing up Invisalign versus traditional braces, the honest answer is that neither is universally better. The right option depends on your specific dental situation, your lifestyle, and what you’re hoping to achieve. This guide is designed to help you understand both options clearly.
How Do Clear Aligners Like Invisalign Work?
Invisalign, one of the most established clear aligner systems, uses a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners to gradually move your teeth into a more aligned position. Each set of aligners is worn for approximately one to two weeks before progressing to the next set. The aligners are removable – taken out for eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing, and flossing.
Treatment length varies depending on the complexity of your case, but most patients complete treatment somewhere between 6 and 18 months. You’ll have check-in appointments with your dentist or through the virtual monitoring process through the Invisalign App (shared with your dentist), all throughout the process to monitor progress and receive your next sets of aligners.
Avenue Dental is a Diamond status Invisalign provider – one of the higher tiers of recognition from Invisalign, reflecting the volume and breadth of cases our team has treated. Learn more about Invisalign here.
How Do Traditional Braces Work?
Traditional braces use brackets bonded to the front surface of each tooth, connected by a wire that is periodically tightened by your orthodontist or dentist. The consistent tension from the wire applies gradual pressure to move teeth into the desired position.
Braces are fixed. They stay on your teeth throughout treatment and cannot be removed by the patient. Treatment with traditional braces typically ranges from 12 months to 3 years depending on the complexity of the case.
While Avenue Dental offers Invisalign, braces are provided by orthodontists. If, following your assessment, braces are considered the more appropriate option for your situation, we will let you know and can refer you accordingly.
How Do They Compare?
Appearance during treatment
Aligners like Invisalign are clear and generally not noticeable in day-to-day interactions. This is one of the most commonly cited reasons adults and teenagers choose clear aligners over braces.
Traditional metal braces are visible. Ceramic braces (tooth-coloured brackets) are less noticeable than metal, but still more visible than clear aligners.
Comfort
Invisalign aligners are made from smooth BPA-free plastic and do not have the brackets or wires that can sometimes cause irritation to the lips and cheeks with traditional braces.
When switching to a new set of aligners, some patients experience mild pressure or discomfort for a day or two as teeth begin to move. This is normal and generally brief.
Braces can cause some discomfort after tightening appointments. Sharp wires or loose brackets can occasionally cause irritation and require an unplanned visit to your dentist or orthodontist.
Eating and diet
With clear aligners, there are no food restrictions – you simply remove your aligners before eating. You can eat whatever you like during treatment.
With braces, certain foods need to be avoided. Hard, sticky, or crunchy foods that could damage the brackets or wires. This is an ongoing dietary consideration for the duration of treatment.
Oral hygiene
Because Invisalign aligners are removable, you brush and floss your teeth normally. You do also need to clean your aligners themselves – rinsing and gentle cleaning each time you remove them.
With braces, cleaning around brackets and wires requires more care and dedicated technique. Food can become trapped around brackets more easily, making thorough cleaning more important and slightly more involved.
Compliance
Clear aligners require 20 to 22 hours of wear per day for treatment to progress as planned. The removability that makes Invisalign convenient also means the outcome depends on consistent compliance. Patients who regularly forget to put aligners back in after meals or remove them for extended periods may find treatment takes longer or produces less consistent results.
Braces, being fixed, require no compliance in this regard – they work continuously regardless.
Complexity of tooth movement
Invisalign has become increasingly capable over the years and can address a wide range of alignment concerns – spacing, mild to moderate crowding, and some bite issues. However, for more complex orthodontic cases – significant bite discrepancies, severe crowding, or cases requiring significant vertical tooth movement – traditional braces may still be the more appropriate treatment option.
An assessment is the only way to determine what your case actually requires.
Which Option Is Right for You?
Consider clear aligners like Invisalign if:
- You’re an adult or teenager who wants a less visible option during treatment
- You have mild to moderate crowding, spacing, or alignment concerns
- You’re able to commit to wearing aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day
- You want the flexibility to remove your aligners for eating and social occasions
- You want fewer in-clinic appointments during treatment
Traditional braces may be more appropriate if:
- Your case is more complex and requires significant tooth movement or bite correction
- Compliance with removable aligners is a concern (particularly relevant for younger patients)
- Your treating clinician recommends them based on your specific clinical situation
The only reliable way to know which option suits your situation is a proper clinical assessment. At Avenue Dental, we offer a free Invisalign consultation where our team can assess your teeth, discuss your goals, and give you an honest recommendation.
