So you’ve made the decision to straighten your teeth. Good work!
With so many options now available, it can be a difficult decision to decide which way to go. Before we break it down, it is important to note that the best advice you can get is to see one of our friendly dentists who can assess your individual circumstances and then recommend which pathway would be best suited to you. This is because the type of orthodontic treatment that is suitable for you also depends on the type of orthodontic problem you need to have corrected.
Traditional braces are traditionally made of metal with brackets attached to the outside of teeth. Wires and rubber bands are then attached to these brackets to manipulate your teeth in ways that will correct those orthodontic problems.

Invisalign treatment uses clear, plastic aligners that are customised for each patient through taking a digital 3D scan of their mouth. A series of aligners are then prescribed to the patient with each one moving the teeth in small steps until the correct position is reached.

The Advantages of Invisalign

Invisalign looks better
The biggest benefit of Invisalign is that the retainers are virtually invisible. Patients love that colleagues and friends can’t see they are undergoing orthodontic treatment. For teenagers, it can make a huge positive impact on their self-esteem.

It’s easier to clean your teeth
As the Invisalign retainers are removable, you can take them off to better clean their teeth. Without any wires, flossing and brushing can continue as normal.

 Comfortable to wear
With traditional braces, patients often get cuts and ulcers on their cheeks and lips due to the constant rubbing when eating and talking. With Invisalign, the custom-fitted retainers mean that there are typically no cuts and fewer mouth and gum problems to deal with.

 The Disadvantages of Invisalign

Patients need to have discipline
Being able to remove your aligners is both a pro and a con. For results, you must wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day. Essentially, if you aren’t eating, drinking of cleaning your teeth, you must be wearing your aligners. One of the major reasons for Invisalign treatment failing primarily relates to lack of patient compliance.

Our practices in Caloundra, Kawana, Maroochydore, Bli Bli, North Lakes, Baringa, Sippy Downs, Tewantin, Murrumba Downs, Beerwah and Woolloongabba offer a free Invisalign Consultation.

The Advantages of Traditional Braces

 Suitable for all treatments
Braces are the most powerful treatment method in moving teeth into a desired position so if your case is more complex and difficult, then it may be the only option available to you.

Multiple types of braces to choose from
Some patients like the look of braces and the range of options available in terms of colours. For example, some children see their friends with braces at school and would like the same to fit in.

The Disadvantages of Traditional Braces

 Aesthetics
Some people don’t like the look of traditional braces and are worried they will feel self-conscious about their appearance at work and social settings.

Oral hygiene
Traditional braces make it incredibly difficult to clean your teeth and gums properly. As a result, there is a high risk of plaque build up causing decay and gum disease. Brushing and flossing your teeth is much more difficult with braces and requires you to spend more time and effort to prevent these dental diseases.

Diet and food preparation
Some care needs to be taken with the food and drink you consume with braces. Hard and sticky foods can cause the arch wire to break or a bracket to dislodge from a tooth. If this happens, the braces won’t work until you have the breakage repaired. Multiple breakages and a delay in getting them fixed can prolong your treatment time.

Straightening your teeth isn’t a decision which can be taken lightly, whether it’s for yourself of your child. If you need help in deciding whether to choose braces or Invisalign, then come and speak to our expert team of dentists at Avenue Dental.
