What Is A Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed, permanent solution to replace one or more missing teeth.  It “bridges the gap” created by the missing teeth by using the adjacent teeth (also known as abutment teeth) as anchors for it.  Crowns are placed on the abutment teeth either side of the gap and the artificial teeth on the bridge (called pontics) are joined to these crowns to replace the missing teeth.

When Would I Need A Bridge?

A bridge may be a solution for replacing one or more missing teeth to:

  • Restore your smile
  • Improve chewing function and distribute bite forces
  • Prevent teeth from drifting into the gaps from the missing tooth or teeth
  • Avoid wearing partial dentures

What Are The Different Types Of Bridges?

Traditional Bridge:

A traditional bridge uses teeth on both sides of the gap as abutments to support the pontic tooth/teeth.  These can be used to replace one or more missing teeth and if designed properly, can be used in areas of the mouth where there are higher chewing forces.

Cantilever Bridge:

A cantilever bridge may be used to replace a single tooth.  It uses only one abutment tooth to support the pontic tooth and placement is usually limited to areas of the mouth where bite forces are lower.

Maryland Bridge:

A Maryland bridge consists of a pontic tooth with small wings attached to either side which are bonded to the back of the abutment teeth.  These may be used in specific cases and have the advantage of minimal preparation of the anchor teeth.

Implant Supported Bridge:

An implant supported bridge uses dental implants as anchors instead of natural teeth.  These may be used in areas where the gap is too large for a traditional bridge, or there are no suitable teeth to act as abutments for a traditional bridge.

What Are Bridges Made Of?

Dental bridges are often made from all ceramic (non-metal), porcelain fused to metal (metal core with a porcelain outer surface), or metal alloy materials.  The type of material used will depend on several factors such as location in the mouth, chewing forces, number of missing teeth and aesthetic requirements.

Bridge Treatment Description

Bridges are usually completed over two appointments.

The first visit involves preparing and shaping the tooth or teeth that will support your new bridge.  Moulds are then taken so that a customized bridge can be made.  The dentist may take photos to assist with shade matching, or alternatively an appointment will be made for you at our dental laboratory.

The bridge may take up to two weeks to be fabricated at the laboratory.  During this period, a temporary bridge is placed to protect your teeth between visits until the completed bridge is installed.  The temporary bridge is not as strong as the final bridge and therefore it is important to avoid chewing hard or sticky foods while it is in place.  If your temporary bridge becomes dislodged during this time, please call us for advice.

At the second visit the dentist will remove the temporary bridge and check the fit and colour of the new bridge prior to installing it.  Minor adjustments if required will ensure perfect fit and function.

Caring For Your Dental Bridge

Dental bridges can last many years if looked after properly.  The bridge itself cannot decay, however the edge of the teeth where it joins can.  It is important to maintain good oral hygiene practices and attend regular dental hygiene visits to ensure the maximum lifespan of your bridge.  Your dentist or hygienist may recommend special oral hygiene aids to assist with cleaning around and underneath your bridge.
