At Avenue Dental on the Sunshine Coast, all of our dentists are skilled at restoring teeth with custom made, beautiful dental crowns.
What is a Crown?
A crown is essentially a custom made “cap” which is bonded to your existing tooth. This helps to strengthen the tooth and restores it’s natural size, shape, appearance and colour.
Why would I need a Crown?
Crowns are a very strong and reliable solution for reinforcing damaged teeth that may have been weakened due to:
- Large fillings
- Tooth decay
- Wear (wearing away of natural tooth structure due to aging, grinding or acid erosion)
- Root Canal Treatment (procedure to treat infected teeth)
Dental crowns are also used for cosmetic dentistry to improve the overall appearance of teeth that may be crooked, discoloured or poorly shaped.
What are Crowns made from?
Crowns are often made from porcelain (non-metal) or metal alloys (gold).
Porcelain crowns are strong and can match or improve the colour of natural teeth. Recent advances in dental porcelains mean that we can now restore strength to teeth as well improve the appearance with a metal free alternative. Commonly used dental porcelains and ceramics include feldspathic porcelain, lithium disilicate, and zirconia. Most crowns that we now place are metal free porcelains and are stronger and have better longevity that ever before.
Metal alloy (gold ) crowns are used for added strength and durability; they can be used for molars that undergo heavy grinding and chewing forces, but as they are made of gold they look gold in colour and not tooth coloured.
What is involved with a Crown?
A dentist will assess your medical history, teeth and gums during a dental examination and take an x-ray to determine if a crown is recommended.
Crowns are generally completed after two appointments.
The first visit involves shaping and cleaning the tooth to allow the crown to fit. Moulds are then taken of the tooth and from this, your customized crown can be made.
During this period, a temporary crown is placed on the tooth; it is primarily designed to protect your tooth between visits, until the completed crown is placed.
When the crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed. The dentist will check the fit of the new crown and then the crown will be cemented onto the tooth.
Lets recap! Benefits of a Crown…
1) Restores the shape and appearance of your tooth
2) Strengthens and holds the tooth together
3) One of the strongest, longest lasting dental treatments available for repairing and restoring teeth
