Sedation dentistry exists to take that edge off. It’s a range of options that help you stay calm and comfortable in the chair, so the appointment feels manageable rather than something to dread. Here’s a rundown of what’s available and how it works.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help you relax during dental treatment. It ranges from mild options that simply settle your nerves while you stay fully awake, through to deeper sedation for more involved procedures. The right level depends on you — how anxious you feel, what treatment you’re having, and your general health. The point isn’t to push everyone toward the deepest option; it’s to find the lightest approach that lets you get through the appointment comfortably.
What sedation options are available?
At Avenue Dental we offer a range of options, so there’s usually something to suit whether you’re mildly nervous or genuinely fearful:
- Local anaesthetic — the standard for most dental treatment. It numbs the area being worked on so you don’t feel pain during the procedure, while you stay fully awake.
- Happy gas (nitrous oxide) — a mild, fast-acting option breathed in through a small mask that helps you feel relaxed, with the effects wearing off quickly afterwards. We use it often for children, and sometimes for adults too.
- IV sedation — a deeper level of sedation administered by an anaesthetist. We schedule dedicated IV sedation sessions at the practice for this.
- General anaesthetic (GA) — for patients who need it, we offer GA at our Maroochydore practice, which has its own in-built GA facility. We’re currently the only practice on the Sunshine Coast with one on site.
Which option suits you is something your dentist will talk through with you, based on the treatment you’re having and how you’re feeling about it.
How does sedation dentistry work?
It starts with a conversation. Before any sedation, we assess your health, your anxiety levels, and the treatment you need, then talk through which option fits. For lighter options like happy gas, you’ll feel relaxed during the appointment and back to yourself fairly soon after. For deeper sedation like IV or GA, there’s more planning involved — including how you’ll get home afterwards, since you won’t be able to drive — and we’ll walk you through all of that beforehand so nothing comes as a surprise.
Throughout any sedation, your comfort and safety are monitored closely from start to finish.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
When it’s carried out by trained professionals with proper assessment and monitoring, sedation dentistry is considered very safe. The key is the preparation: we assess each patient individually to work out the most appropriate option, and your vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure. Deeper sedation like IV and GA is handled by an anaesthetist, so that level of care is in qualified hands.
