Lifelike tooth replacement

We are proud of the high quality work we do. Avenue Dental is excited to be able to offer dental implants as a treatment alternative at our Sunshine Coast and Brisbane dental practices. It is amazing the difference that dental implants can make in people’s ability to chew and function, confidence and quality of life.

Dental implants are the longest lasting, most lifelike tooth replacement that we can do. They can be used to replace a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. Dental implants can even be used when you have no teeth to make a fully dental implant supported bridge or to help stabilize dentures.

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants can be surgically placed into the bone when teeth are missing to replace the missing root part of the tooth. This is called the surgical phase of treatment. After the dental implant has healed, a dental implant crown is placed onto the dental implant to replace the visible part of the tooth above the gumline. This restores natural function, chewing and aesthetics.

Replacing a single missing tooth with dental implants

When replacing a single missing tooth, in many situations dental implants provide the best long-term solution. The other options when missing a single tooth are a denture (dentures move around, fall in and out when eating and speaking, and increase the chances of decay of your surrounding teeth making you more likely to lose more teeth in the future), or a bridge (a bridge requires a crown on the teeth on either side of the missing tooth, it is better than a denture as it does not come in and out it is fixed in place, it can achieve a very natural appearance, feel and function, however it does rely on two teeth doing the work of three teeth).

When replacing a single missing tooth, dental implants are a reliable solution to restore natural appearance, function, and feel. The end result is something that looks and feels like a tooth and you treat it just like a tooth by brushing and flossing it twice a day. One advantage of dental implants is that they cannot get decayed, but they are slightly higher risk of gum disease than natural teeth. While dental implants are a fantastic treatment alternative when you have a single missing tooth, nothing is as good as your natural teeth so we always make every effort to save your natural teeth if at all possible.

Replacing multiple missing teeth with dental implants

If you are missing multiple teeth, dental implants are a fantastic option. The alternative solutions to dental implants in this situation are dentures (we discussed the problems with these earlier) or a long span bridge (this is a longer bridge that means two teeth are doing the work of 4 or more teeth which generally has lower success rates).

Dental implants can be used as a bridge (eg two dental implants replacing three teeth with a suspended tooth between the two dental implants) or they can be used as single units (eg if you are missing three teeth – then placing three separate dental implants with separate dental implant crowns on top of the dental implants). Many people chose this option to do away with a partial denture that they do not like.

Entire Dental Arch Dental Implant Replacement

If you are missing all of your upper or all of your lower teeth then dental implants can be used to replace all your teeth with a fixed implant bridge that restores as close as possible the appearance and function of natural teeth. This is a fantastic treatment alternative as the only other option in this situation is a full denture. For this option, multiple implants are placed into the jaw and after healing they are restored with a dental implant bridge that links all the teeth together into one unit. This is fixed in place so does not come in and out like a denture, and restores natural, beautiful aesthetics.

Dental Implant Denture Stabilisation

Many people are not happy with their dentures, especially their lower dentures. Lower dentures do not have the same degree of suction to hold in as upper dentures and often move around, are dislodged by your tongue and lips, rub on the lower ridge and are generally uncomfortable. To make lower dentures more comfortable, two dental implants can be placed in the lower jaw to help stabilize the lower denture. The dental implants have attachments on them that help resist dislodgement of the lower denture which greatly increases comfort, chewing and function.

A number of our dentists have completed extensive training on the surgical aspects of dental implants, while all other dentists are experienced in the restorative phase of dental implants. If you are unhappy with dentures, or suffer from unsightly empty spaces in your mouth, we can help you to achieve a balanced and attractive smile with this treatment and restore function and chewing ability.
